<etym xml:lang="ru">По своему облику <oRef/> напоминает отглагольные имена орудия на
<m>-næ</m>, — такие, как <ref type="xr" target="#entry_araznæ"><w>araznæ</w>
<q>руль</q></ref> от <ref type="xr" target="#entry_arazyn"><w>arazun</w>
<q>направлять</q></ref>, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_xeznæ"><w>xeznæ</w>
<q>пастбище</q></ref> от <ref type="xr" target="#entry_xezun"><w>xezun</w>
<q>пасти</q></ref> и т. п. (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_ОЯФ_I"/>
<biblScope>573 сл.</biblScope></bibl>). Однако единственный подходящий глагол <ref type="xr" target="#entry_pīryn"><w>pīryn</w>
<q>чесать шерсть</q></ref> слишком далек по значению. Ожидали бы глагола со значением
<q>вертеть</q>, <q>вращать</q>; ср. <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d2839e240" xml:id="mentioned_d2839e166" xml:lang="cv"><lang/>
<w>păr-</w>
<gloss><q>вертеть</q>, <q>вращать</q></gloss></mentioned>. <bibl><author>Bailey</author>
(<ref type="bibl" target="#ref_BSOAS"/>
<biblScope>1958 XXI 539</biblScope>)</bibl> считает возможным связать <ref type="xr" target="#entry_pīryn"/> и <oRef/> и возводить их к иранскому глагольному корню со
значением <q>царапать</q>. Помимо семантических трудностей, сохранение начального <c>p</c>
в исконно иранском слове (без перехода <c>p</c><c>f</c>) представляется крайне
сомнительным.</etym>
<etym xml:lang="en">The word <oRef/> resembles deverbal nouns of tools ending with
<m>-næ</m>, — such as <ref type="xr" target="#entry_araznæ"><w>araznæ</w>
<q>wheel</q></ref> from <ref type="xr" target="#entry_arazyn"><w>arazun</w>
<q>aim</q></ref>, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_xeznæ"><w>xeznæ</w>
<q>pasture-land</q></ref> from <ref type="xr" target="#entry_xezun"><w>xezun</w>
<q>pasture</q></ref> and so on (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_ОЯФ_I"/>
<biblScope>573 ff.</biblScope></bibl>). However the only appropriate verb <ref type="xr" target="#entry_pīryn"><w>pīryn</w>
<q>comb wool</q></ref> is too far by its meaning. One would expect a verb with meaning
<q>roll</q>, <q>rotate</q>; cf. <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d2839e166" xml:id="mentioned_d2839e240" xml:lang="cv"><lang/>
<w>păr-</w>
<gloss><q>rotate</q>, <q>roll</q></gloss></mentioned>. <bibl><author>Bailey</author>
(<ref type="bibl" target="#ref_BSOAS"/>
<biblScope>1958 XXI 539</biblScope>)</bibl> considers it possible to connect <ref type="xr" target="#entry_pīryn"/> and <oRef/> and trace them back to one Iranian verbal
root with the meaing <q>scratch</q>. In addition to semantic difficulties, preserving the
initial <c>p</c> in the original Iranian word (without transition <c>p</c><c>f</c>)
seems extremely doubtful.</etym>
