<biblScope>XXI 539</biblScope></bibl>). Isolation of this Ossetic word on the Iranian
ground as well as isolation of the Vedic word on the Indo-European basis force oneself to
treaten this etymology with a certain precaution. <mentioned xml:lang="peo"><lang/>

root of <mentioned xml:lang="sa-vaidika"><lang/>
<w>vāṡī</w></mentioned> seems to be very attractive for bringing it closer with
<mentioned xml:lang="cu"><lang/>
<w>vajati</w></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="ru"><lang/>
<w>vajat'</w></mentioned> (this word has no reliable etymology: <bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Vasmer._REW"/>
<biblScope>I 175</biblScope></bibl>). For Ossetic <oRef/> one has to take into
consideration also some Finno-Ugric and Caucasian facts: <mentioned xml:lang="hu"><lang/>
<w>vésö</w>
<gloss><q>chisel</q></gloss></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="fi"><lang/>
<w>veitsi</w>
<gloss><q>knife</q></gloss></mentioned> (about this group see: <bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_MNTESz."/>

<gloss><q>chopper</q></gloss></mentioned> (about this word see: <bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Шагиров._Этим._сл."/>

somewhere with the possibility of an accidental consonance.<lb/><bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Miller._Gr."/>
