е. <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*kap-</hi>
‘схватывать’ и пр. (<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4954e178" xml:id="mentioned_d4954e145" xml:lang="la"><lang/>

fish. From the formal point of view <ref type="xr" target="#entry_kæf"/> is
related to <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kæfoj</hi>, as <ref type="xr" target="#entry_sag"/> deer does so to
<ref type="xr" target="#entry_sagoj"/> pitchfork, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_wīs"/> twig does so to <ref type="xr" target="#entry_wīsoj"/> broom, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_zæng"/> foot does so to <ref type="xr" target="#entry_zængoj"/> gaiter. — <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kæf</hi> is from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*kapæ</hi>,
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">kæfoj</hi> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kæfojnæ</hi> is from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*kapana-</hi>. From semantic point of view this
relation can be explained on assumption that baskets of such form were used for
fishing. It could mean something like Russian <hi rendition="#rend_italic">верша</hi>, a woven fish trap in
the form of a funnel with wide opening, as <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kæfoj</hi> has. The other possibility
is its relation to Indo-European <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*kap-</hi> to catch etc. (<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4954e145" xml:id="mentioned_d4954e178" xml:lang="la"><lang/>
