The latter goes back to araθni- and meant elbow by itself; cf. ā̆ranj, ā̆ran elbow and cubit, arinǰ, årinǰ, ārenǰ (these possibly borrowed from Persian), yorn, -yērn in wīṣ̄tyērn elbow (Morgenstierne I 74), arīnč (ʼrʼync) , arəθna- elbow, frāraθni-, arašni- cubit, áratni-, aleina, elina, ὠλένη, ulna, uilenn, elin, ilin elbow. The Ossetic ærīn comes from araθni-, like xsīn from xsaθni- (in other cases -īn goes back to -aina or -ani, for instance, zærīn from zaranya). One is led to believe that the reinforcement of the word ærīn elbow by the determinative or cong arm (elbow of arm) was needed when the word had been established in the meaning elbow q. v. cængærīnæ cubit contains, instead of , the synonymous with a weakened vowel.
