Если же первоначальной была форма maxs- (nymæxsyn) с последующим æm-mæxs- → æm-bæxs- (как æmbūl- из æm-mūl- и др.), то надежной этимологии не видно; может быть, к ham-maxs- ← ham-mag-s от mаg- чародействовать (скрывать путем волшебства?); ср. magu- маг, maɣa место совершения тайных ритуалов. Fusion of the preverb æm- (← ham-) with bæxs-. In parallel, there is a verb with a different prefix nymæxsyn to hide, which indicates the alternation of the initial consonant bæxs- ‖ mæxs-. If the form with b were the original one, then it could be traced back to ba(r)xš- ← barg-s- ( bherǵh- to hide etc.) and, therefore, connected to æmbærzyn to cover. The relation between æmbærz- and æmbæ(r)xs- is equal to the relation between araz- and aræxs- or az- to chase to æxsæ lash. If, however, the basic form were maxs- (nymæxsyn) with subsequent æm-mæxs- → æm-bæxs- (as æmbūl- from æm-mūl- etc.), then a reliable etymology is not discernable; maybe from ham-maxs- ← ham-mag-s from mаg- to do magic (to conceal by magic?); cf. magu- mage, maɣa place for conducting secret rituals.
