It is in fact ‘one who has sworn’, derived from ard xæryn ‘to swear’ (see ). People who have solemnly sworn eternal friendship to each other observing of a special ceremony were called that way. In modern times a blood oath was a ceremony where blood brothers put into a cup silver or gold thing and then drank from this cup. There is information about more complex blood oaths in legends and epic literature: for example, mixing of the blood of the both participants, solemn swearing in front of fire etc.%n571.
