В то время предгорья Северного Кавказа были покрыты лесами, и свободная от них область могла называться Ardoz — поляной . — As the geographical term Ardoz is attested in the Armyanskaya geografiya [Armenian geography] VII cent., compiled by Ananias Shirakami (erroneously attributed to Moses of Choren): Alans live behind the Digors in the Ardoz region of the Caucasus Mountains. Ws. Miller correctly identified the Armenian geographer’s term Ardoz with Ossetic ærdoz clearing and with sufficient reason saw Vladikavkaz plain in the Ardoz region ( III 104–108).There is no reason to see in Ardoz a distortion of the hydronym Ardon, contrary to S. Eremin (Trudy VII Kongressa antropologičeskix i ètnografičeskix nauk [Proceedings of the VII Congress of Anthropological and Ethnographic Sciences] 1970 VIII 407). At that time, the foothills of the North Caucasus were covered with forests, and the area free of them could be called Ardoz — clearing Восходит к drauša- и содержит ту же основу, что глагол ᵆrdūzynærdozun холостить, кастрировать: поляна — это выхолощенный, т. е. выкорчеванный участок среди леса. Traces back to drauša- and contains the same stem as ᵆrdūzynærdozun emasculate, castrate: clearing is a castrated, i.e. uprooted plot in the middle of the forest. This interpretation is supported by the expression qæd ærdūzyn uproot the forest, and also by the use of descriptive expression ærdūz kænun castrate, literally make ærdūz instead of ᵆrdūzynærdozun: ærduz kænujnag ʒæwkʼaj xuzæn iǧælʒæg æj he is playful, like a goat that needs to be castrated 51 .
