Мüllenhoff (Ueber die Herkunft u. Sprache d. pontischen Skythen u. Sarmaten, Sber. d. К. Akad. d. Wiss., Berlin, Aug. 1869, стр. 567) видит во второй части maz- великий (в осетинском не сохранилось); в первой части может быть (культовой термин) с отпадением начального w, как в (Vāča-maz → Acæmæz). К осетинскому примыкают: Ačimez, Ečemej, Ašemez, Ašmez, Ačəmez (ср. название горы Ačəmez-max в Очемчирском районе), собственные имена эпических героев.186, 199. — V 72. Has been compared to a proper name from Gorgippia Ἀταμαζας ( II 402, 409, 436, 455), Ἀτταμάζας ( II 402). Müllenhoff (Ueber die Herkunft u. Sprache d. pontischen Skythen u. Sarmaten, Sber. d. K. Akad. d. Wiss., Berlin, Aug. 1869, p. 567) in the second part sees maz- great (lost in Ossetic); the first part could be (a religious term) with the loss of the initial w, like in (Vāča-maz → Acæmæz). The following words are related to the Ossetic word: Ačimez, Ečemej, Ašemez, Ašmez, Ačəmez (cf. the name of the mountain Ačəmez-max in Ochamchira region), all proper names of epic heroes.186, 199. — V 72.
