Весьма показательно, что в Avdīwag иранское daiva сохраняет до-зороастрийское, общеарийское значение божество, а не зороастрийское злой дух, демон. From avd-dīw-ag ← hafta-daiva-ka seven gods? The Alan cult of the seven gods is evidenced by the Alanic name of Theodosia Ἀρδάβδα (the city of) seven gods ( 167 сл.), as well as by the name of the Ossetian holy place Avd ʒwary seven deities (Ws. Miller. OÈ II 259). It is quite revealing that in Avdīwag the Iranian daiva retains the pre-Zoroastrian, common Aryan meaning deity, but not the Zoroastrian evil spirit, demon. This serves as one of the indications that the ancestors of the Ossetians, the Scythians, remained alien to Zoroastrianism (on this also see under the word wæjyg giant). Over time, perhaps under the influence of Christianity, the seven gods (in the form ævdīwævdew) also turned into a demon. However, the old meaning of daiva- god has been preserved in the epics.
