A compound + izæn, where both components mean mother; cf. for the former part , for the latter, iʒä, ižä mother, iǯän dear mother ( I 1520). From the meagre data that have been preserved, under the name Mother was worshipped a deity of lawful order and justice, something typologically close to the Greek Themis: Θέμις goddess of justice, Artī- ( Ašī-) goddess distributing boons. The origins of this cult go back to matriarchical times. — The hybrid Ossetic-Turkic form of the name is not something exceptional; cf. in this respect , tinkærc, , etc. In this case the Ossetic-Turkkic mixture is particularly justified since the sanctuary was a meeting place not only for the Ossetians, but also for the Balkars, who are a Turkic people. — ižä mother is also recognizeable in Ossetic dyǵyzædigiza wet nurse.
