Перенос значения с лошади на собаку следует объяснять тем, что уже на тюркской почве слово получило атрибутивное употребление: arǧamaq at породистая лошадь; ср. также русское употребление слова борзой как эпитета одинаково и собаки и лошади. Передвижению значения способствовало то, что в аргамаке и в борзой ценится одно и то же качество: резвость. Ср. tāzī 1. арабская лошадь, 2. борзая собака. Осетинская форма базируется, по-видимому, на несохранившейся (?) arǧunaq, промежуточной между arǧun и совр. arǧəmaq. 35. Cf. arǧamaq, arǧəmaq, arǧun Oriental horse, thoroughbred horse ( I 299, 301, 302). The semantic shift from horses to dogs should be explained by the fact that the word had already developed an attributive function in Turkic: arǧamaq at thoroughbred horse; cf. also the Russian use of the word borzoj swift, sighthound (borzoi) as an epithet for both dogs and horses. The semantic shift was facilitated by the fact that the same quality, namely agility, is appreciated in horses and in dogs. Cf. tāzī 1. Arabian horse, 2. a dog breed. The Ossetic from is probably based on an unpreserved arǧunaq, intermediate between arǧun and modern arǧəmaq. 35.
