To the stem stū-, stav- (a variant of the common Indo-European root stā-: II 607 сл.) to stand, to place, with the addition of the prefix a-. A similar semantic development of the stem stā-, stav- towards anatomical concepts can be found in Slavic languages: stan figure, waist, ostov (from ostav) skeleton, sustav joint, stava joint, stav body, joint, stava limb ( 319); cf. also astū́ neck, alongside ustu(n)-, sūtūn, ʼstʼwn, stuna-, sthū́ṇā- pillar, column ( XXXVII 49, 48). See , , here, obviously, also concerns stawstawær lumbar area (Dict. p. 1123 — questionable, as we have not come across this word).
