Следы основы az-, axš- быть в согласии, в мире сохранились и в других иранских языках: āxš- беречь, лелеять (?), āxšti-, āšt, āštī мир, āšyān гнездо, приют, убежище (из āxša-dāna, как šahryār из xšaθra-dāra). Сюда же, может быть, axsǵiag любимый. К глаголу axsyn ловить слово гнездо никакого отношения не имеет.Вс. Миллер. Gr. 16 — ошибочно: axæstonæ Nest; в обоих диалектах axæstdonaxæstdonæ тюрьма, с одной стороны, и axston | astʼonæ гнездо, с другой, — строго различаются. The origin of this word, as well as the somewhat unusual phonetic relation between the Iron and Digor forms, can be explained, it seems, by invoking Digor azun to give shelter, to caress, to feed ( II 188). The stem az- presupposes an older ag-’ the latter could have a variant with inchoative s: ag-s- → axš-; in the Iron axston (from axsdon) we find this stem axs-, whereas Digor astʼonæ (from az-donæ) contains another variant of this stem, az-, found in azun to give shelter (for the alternation of voiced and ejective consonants d → tʼ, cf. cʼux, skʼuænxun, sikʼit, siskʼi, stʼeǧun etc.). Traces of the stem az-, axš- be in harmony, in peace are preserved in other Iranian languages as well: āxš- to protect, cherish, āxšti-, āšt, āštī peace, āšyān nest, shelter, refuge (from āxša-dāna, like šahryār from xšaθra-dāra). Maybe also related is axsǵiag beloved. The word nest has no relation to the verb axsyn to catch.Ws. Miller. Gr. 16, mistakenly: axæstonæ Nest; in both dialects, axæstdonaxæstdonæ prison, on the one hand, and axston | astʼonæ nest, on the other, are strictly differentiated.
