Звуковое развитие слова представляется в следующем виде: āxag-s → ā-haxš → axæss- → axs-; что иронский также прошел через ступень axæss-, подтверждается с несомненностью словами axæst арестант и axæstdon тюрьма. Семантически менее вероятна связь с xæssyn нести (из xarš-). The initial a- is a preverb. An older form of the stem is evidenced by Digor: xæss-; cf. nyxsynnixæssun, xæssun to get stuck and ræxsynræxæssun to weave archi shoes; xæss- (from xæxs-), in its turn, probably goes back to *hag-s-, where s is an inchoative suffix; the initial meaning of the root hag (seĝh according to II 481) is to take hold of; cf. sah-, sāhatḗ to win, haz- to acquire, to grab, ἔχω to hold, to possess, to get hold of. The phonetic development of the word seems to have had the following form: āxag-s → ā-haxš → axæss- → axs-; that the Iron dialect has also passed through the step axæss- is confirmed with certainty by the words axæst prisoner and axæstdon prison. A connection to xæssyn to carry (from xarš-) is semantically less likely.
