Вторая часть, axst, встречается еще в сложении qær-axst, qær æmæ axst ‘сильный крик, шум’, где означает ‘крик’, ‘шум’. Это дает право выделить axst как самостоятельное когда-то слово со значением ‘крик’, ‘вопль’ и т. п. Оно сближается с -astв таких сложениях, как balavast мычание, bāngast блеяние теленка, vaast мычание, wakast крик горной куропатки и др.. Возводится к *vast, *vaxšt oт vās- (ос. ) ‘кричать’ и пр. Ос. форма *(w)axst, может быть, результат контаминации с vāk-, vaxš- ‘говорить’, ‘звать’ и пр. Первая часть по видимости идентична с ‘синий’. Но как оправдать семантически такое сложение („синий крик“)? Может быть, „крик, при котором кричащий синеет от напряжения“? Ср. выражение qæræj bacʼæx īs „от крика он посинел“. Возможно также, что cʼæx — из с обычным в сложных словах ослаблением гласного (а → æ). В этом случае ср. cʼax-cʼax ‘резкие, пронзительные крики’, . It consists of cʼæx-axst. The second part, axst, is found also in the compound qær-axst, qær æmæ axst ‘loud scream, noise, where means ‘scream’, ‘noise’. This allows us to mark axst as an old separate word with the meaning ‘scream’, ‘cry’ etc. It relates to -astin such compounds as balavast bellow, bāngast bleat, vaast bellow, wakast snowcock scream etc. It traces back to *vast, *vaxšt from vās- (Ossetic ) ‘scream’ etc. Ossetic form *(w)axst may be a result of contamination with vāk-, vaxš- ‘speak’, ‘call’ etc. The first part is apparently identical to ‘blue’. But how can one justify such a compound semantically (“blue sream”)? Perhaps “scream when the screaming man turns blue“? Cf. expression %iqæræj bacʼæx īs%i „he turned blue because of screaming“. It is also possible that cʼæx is from with a regular in compounds weakening of a vowel (а → æ). In this case cf. cʼax-cʼax ‘harsh, shrill screams’, .
