Предложенное Миллером разъяснение первой части (dar) остается в силе; одно из основных значений глагола — ‘носить одежду’. Что касается -æs, то это, по-видимому, не суффикс, а остаток слова *wæst ‘одетый’, ‘одежда’ из vasta- ( vas-, vah- одевать). Miller%s fairly rejects %sHübschmann’s comparison with dərəza- fetters and writes: „daræs seems to derivate from the verbal root dar- (dar-un ‘keep’, ‘wear’), although the suffix iss not clear to us“ (III 142). The clarification of the first part (dar) proposed by Miller remains in force; one of the main meanings of the verb is ‘wear clothes’. As for -æs, this is apparently not a suffix but the rest of the word *wæst ‘dressed’, ‘clothes’ from vasta- ( vas-, vah- dress up). Thus, *dar- wæst → daræs with a regular loss of w after a consonant and the loss of the final -t, like in ‘(it) is’, ‘look’, ‘valour’ etc. The exact meaning of the word daræs in this case — ‘wearable’ or ‘clothing’.
