Ср. frav- плыть, двигаться шатаясь, колеблясь; plav-, prav- плыть, волноваться (о пламени, одежде), идти волнами, течь волнами, плавати, плавать, pláuti полоскать, flawen обмывать, flōwan течь через край, разливаться, to flow течь, плавно литься, flow течение, поток, прилив, πλέω плыву, plūere дождить. Иначе: Bailey1948 XII 331 (fæjlawyn ← *pati-vi-rāv-). It is divided into fæj-law-un | fe-law-un. It traces back to *pati-frāv- or *pāti-flāv-, where pati is a preverb, which gives in Ossetic fæ or fi | fе. In this case in Iron there is the first form fæ (with j before liquids — fæj), in Digor there is the second form (fе). The stem law- is from flāv- with the usual loss of f at the beginning before a liquid.
