Ср. firēftan : firēb- обманывать, rēw хитрость, коварство, frēftan : frēp-, brēp- обманывать, βrβʼnt обман, rip-, lip- мазать, замазывать, обманывать, rip- обман, ripu- обманщик, плут, lip- мазать. Исходное значение было ‘мазать’. Поэтому справедливо относят сюда же славянские глаголы со значением ‘лепить’, ‘клеить’ и пр. ( лепить, липнуть); см. II 403. На иранской почве значение ‘мазать’ сохранилось в памирских: rofam я мажу. — Ср. д. .%nII 56, 87, III 156; 20, 34, 61. — 64. Traces back to *pati-raip-, a contraction of the preverb fæ (←pati-) and a non-retained independently verb liv- (from rip- with the regular change r → I before i). Cf. firēftan : firēb- deceive, rēw slyness, guile, frēftan : frēp-, brēp- deceive, βrβʼnt deception, rip-, lip- paint, smear, deceive, rip- deception, ripu- deceiver, cheat, lip- paint. The initial meaning was ‘smear’. That is why Slavic verb with the meaning ‘mould’, ‘glue’ etc. are also related to it ( lepitʼ stick, lipnutʼ be sticky); see II 403. In the Iranian languages, the meaning ‘smear’ is retained in Pamir languages: rofam I am smearing. — Cf. Digor .%nII 56, 87, III 156; 20, 34, 61. — 64.
