In the first part of both forms there is ‘behind’. In the second part of the Iron word there is ‘spear’; thus, fæs-arc literally means ‘behind the spear’, which was carried behind the back. It is more difficult to explain Digor-bærcæ in fæsa-bærcæ; it may be related to ‘measure (of gunpowder)’, if it was carried behind the back; or it may be related to the verb ‘ride’ (see ), and thus, fæsa-bærcæ means ‘riding behind (the chief rider)’.
