From fæs-m- ← *pas-mā- literally ‘after measure’ → ‘imitate’, cf. the derivation pattern in nach-ahmen imitate, literally ‘after (nach) measure (ahmen)’. Cf. Iranian languages: püt-müi- imitate (from *pati-mā- ‘measure after’). The same model is in prati-mā- imitate, literally ‘measure after’. The interchangeability of pas(ča) and pati in the first part of the compound is also found in Iranian words meaning ‘remorse’ (see ). The verb mā- ‘measure’ is with zero ablaut grade m-, as opposed to ny-ma-jyn [] ‘count’ with the strong ablaut grade. Cf. the same alternation of the strong grade and the zero grade in || etc. The Digor form fænz is secondary; cf. | , | cans, | sans, | anz (361 fn., 379).%n165.
