Может быть, из *piθra-na, от pitu- ‘пища’, ‘мясо’ (см. | fid ‘мясо’). В этом случае firton означало бы собственно „мясной (скот)“, „(скот) доставляющий пищу“. It was compared to pṛthuka- child, baby, πόρτις calf, heifer (III 169, referring to Hübschmann, questionable; Uhlenbeck.Etym. Worterbuch der altind. Spr., p. 174). The etymology is not satisfactory both from semantic and phonetic points of view (ṛ gives ær, ar in Ossetic, not ir). It may be from *piθra-na, from pitu- ‘food’, ‘meat’ (see | fid ‘meat’). In this case firton would have meant ‘meat (cattle)’, ‘(cattle) which gives food’.
