Further origin is unclear. It is possible that belongs to the group of plant names that have the augment mæ- in the beginning (see mænærǧ raspberry). In this case it is the element ǧæld- that needs to be etymologized. This could historically be nothing else than a variation on zæld- grass ( ǵhel- and ghol-); see .
