Should be assigned to zoomorphic ethnonyms; cf. maqqæl name of a predatory bird, maqqæl kite (bird), mæqyl red-footed falcon, little bustard, kite. Ethnonyms of this type have already been attested in the Caucasus, the Dido people in the Caucasus call themselves c̣ezi from c̣ej eagle, Avars call them c̣unta from c̣un id. ( XL 3 22, 104); the oldest town of the Ingush tribe Feappii is called Ǟrzij, which also means eagle (cf. ərezifya-, arcʼiv, arcʼivi id.); the name Circassian (Russian čerkes) should also be connected to karkas, čarkas ( cærgæs) id.
