В первой части marka- смерть (см. выше); во второй— asa- еда от as- есть, кушать; ср. такие образования, как prātarāśa- утренняя еда, sāyamāsa- вечерняя еда; ср. также mīnas угощение, bas суп (← upa+asa). Сложение marg-as образовалось тогда, когда marg (← marka-) означало еще смерть, не получив более специального значения яд. Probably derived from marka+asa meal (asa-) of death (marka-), funerary feast. In the former part marka- death (see above); in the latter, asa- food from as- eat; cf. also such derivates as prātarāśa- morning meal, sāyamāsa- evening meal; cf. also mīnas food given to guest, bas soup (← upa+asa). The compound marg-as was formed at a time when marg (← marka-) still meant death, not having yet received its special meaning poison.
