Probably from qæd ǧædæ stem with the suffix -ynʒ-inʒæ, as in ærcynʒ triangular needle, wadynʒ syrinx. The formant -ynʒ had in these words, as it seems, a diminutive meaning, and therefore literally meant a little stem. Benveniste (Etudes 16) inaccurately attributes to the word the meaning garlic (ail) as well and compares it with gandanā leek from gand- stink. 574.
