Формально ср. istabr, sitabr толстый, твердый, stawra- твердый, но по семантике более показательны некоторые германские дериваты того же корня: stepe, step шаг, след, stapfo, Stapfe след, итал. (из герм.) stampa печать, штамп, Stempel клеймо ( 1011—1013. — II 1148—1149). Для идеосемантики (след ноги → пятно) ср. также пятно от пята ( II 478). Мало вероятна связь с stʼælfyn вздрагивать. — Без начального s ср. tæpp пятно. According to the Morgenstierne’s guess (in the letter), we can trace the word back to stafra- (more precisely, to stafrya-): stebh-ro- from stebh- step vigorously, step, tramp with the development of the meaning step, trace → spot. Cf. formally istabr, sitabr thick, solid, stawra- solid, but semantically, some Germanic derivatives of the same stem are more significant: stepe, step step, trace, stapfo, Stapfe trace, (from ) stampa stamp, print, Stempel earmark ( 1011—1013. — II 1148—1149). As for the ideosemantics (foot trace → spot) cf. also pyatno from pyata ( II 478). The connection of with stʼælfyn shudder is less possible. — Without the initial s cf. tæpp spot.
