(см. под и ср. ниже tʼæpænæg кадка). Но они же, по семантической поляризации, получают значение плоский и т. п., см. . — Bailey восстанавливает (s)tep-, (s)tap- (ср. viṣṭap плоская поверхность, степь) и относит сюда ос. tʼæpæn, tæbæǧ тарелка и др. ( 1963 XXVI 83, 87, 89. — Cp.: Kellens, Kratylos 1971 XVI 27. — Трубачев, Этимология 1965, М., 1967, стр. 39. — Pohl, Russian Linguistics 1975 II 87–88). Однако ос. tʼæpæn выпадает из этих сопоставлений: не говоря о смычно-гортанном tʼ, в исконно иранском слове имели бы tæfæn. Cf. taban, tapan flat, smooth place, sole, tabanak short, undersized, taban baləq bream, crucian carp (flat fish) ( III 963–964. — 462). From it there is also tʼabani sole. Consonant words of similar meaning in various unrelated languages indicate sound symbolism: tʼapa, tʼapanig flat ( 412), tapan stomach ( XXXVII 166), čʼapani, a-čʼapan navel (cavity), dabali short, tʼapʼo-bi hollows in the forest (). — Ideophones like tpl, tpn etc. usually mean round, convex etc. (see under and cf. below tʼæpænæg tub). But they themselves, according to semantic polarization, get the meaning flat etc., see . — Bailey reconstructs (s)tep-, (s)tap- (cf. viṣṭap flat surface, step' steppe) and refers here Ossetic tʼæpæn, tæbæǧ plate etc. ( 1963 XXVI 83, 87, 89. — Cf.: Kellens, Kratylos 1971 XVI 27. — Trubachev, Ètimologija 1965, Moscow, 1967, p. 39. — Pohl, Russian Linguistics 1975 II 87–88). However, Ossetic tʼæpæn falls out of these comparisons: apart from the stop-laryngeal tʼ, in the original Iranian word we would have tæfæn.
