As wedded women became older, they need not observe this custom as strictly, sometimes even being freed of it. Lifting this custom involved killing a sacrificial animal. There is a folktale about this: the father-in-law became upset about his daughter-in-law not talking in his presence, and he decided to free her from this custom. As needed, he slaughtered a ram for this purpose. From waʒ-sadyn literally shadow, hide (sadyn) speech (waʒ), with the regular shift of ʒ → j. For the first part, see wac, waʒæn etc., cf wajʒæf reproach from waʒ-ʒæf a hit with the word. For the second part compare čhad-, čhādayati cover, shadow, hide, conceal, keep a secret, čhannam secretly, quietly. The same verb with the preverb ā- is recognisable in asadyn (= āčhādaya-) become cloudy, cover with clouds ( 76).
