Лат. lutra выдра — результат табуистической деформации или контаминации utra (← udra-) с latum грязь, ср.: 570. — Из аланского (сарматского) идут vurd, vudor выдра (Munkácsi, V 326. — 119, 216, прим. 2. — 103. — 347—348. — 70). III 144; 19, 36. The cluster rd often occurs as a result of the metathesis from dr: rdyn bow from druna-, rdū hair from drau- etc. The word | urdæ contains the same metathesis. It goes regularly back to udra-, Indo-European udro-, which is connected with udor-, wedor- water ( 78 ff.). The Indo-European peoples knew this animal well ever since they lived in their ancestral home, i.e. at least since 4th millenium BC. The lexical correpondences are: udrak, udra- otter, udra- the name of some water animal, ūdr, udr otter ( I 96), vydra, wydra, ū́dra, otr, ottar, Otter, Fisch-otter otter, ὕδρα hydra, ἕνυδρις otter. lutra otter is a result of tabooistic deformation or lexical blending utra (← udra-) with latum mud, cf.: 570. — From Alanian (Sarmatian) are borrowed vurd, vudor otter (Munkácsi, V 326. — 119, 216, note 2. — 103. — 347—348. — 70).Ws.
