The initial х- is prothetic, as in , etc.; ubeʒæstæ regularly goes back to ubai-zastā both hands. This word is remarkable by the fact that both of its components, well known in other Indo-European languages, are not found anywhere else in Ossetic. Cf. for the first part uba-, ubē, uva-, ubhau, feminine form ubhē, oba, oba, feminine obe, abù, bai, beide, both, ambo, ἂμφω, āmpe. On the genesis and relationships of Indo-European forms see: I 107. — For the second part: dast (this form has entered many other Iranian languages), dasta-, zasta-, hasta- hand, pa-žastìs armpit. For the composite as a whole, cf. hvādastä with both hands.
