Развитие значения такое же, как булава → булавка. Окончание -ij в дигорском вторичное; ср. | fij, lxyncʼ | ælxij, | æfsoj.574. From ‘spear’ with a diminutive suffix -ynʒ, which is also found in ‘reed-pipe’. The transfer of meaning from ‘spear’ to ‘needle’ was motivated by the fact that Scythian and Alan spears and arrows were tree-edged. More information about this is to be found in ‘arrow-head’. The development of the meaning is the same as in bulava → bulavka. The Digor ending -ij is secondary; compare | fij, lxyncʼ | ælxij, | æfsoj.574.
