The fusion of the prefix æv- ( apa-) which is now out of use with the stem ǧaw- ‘to waste’, ‘to consume’, ‘to reduce’, see | ǧawun. The prefix æv- (apa-) is used here in a negative sense. This usage also finds support in other Iranian languages; cf., e.g., *apō('pw), ap- not, without (II 163, 168), and also bē (from *apaiy: 33) without. Hence, æv-ǧaw means ‘not wasteable’, ‘untouchable’. We found the same semantics of the prefix æv- in the word ‘sober’.
