Звуковое развитие: grabna- → gravna- → grauna- → lxun-; ср. из kabnaka-, , из tafna-, из hvafna- и др. Смущает, однако, то, что во всех других случаях глагол grab- отразился в осетинском с rǧ-, lǧ-, а не lx-: , , irǧævyn, . Приходится считаться также с ʼlx кончик веретена ( 16. — 126), если это слово не сближается с alǧ кончик. В статье <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">Arya III</q> ( 1961 XXIV 472, прим. 9) Bailey восстанавливает базу alek-, alakh, привлекая сюда же ἠλακάτη, ἀλακάτα прялка, веретено. С ἠλακάτη Lidén (Armenische Studien. Göteborg, 1906, стр. 130—131) сближал il, ilikʼ веретено. Имеем, стало быть, ряд: ос. ælxun- (j возникает вторично перед сонантом) из alaxuna-, alax, ἠλακάτη, il, ilikʼ веретено. — В любом случае не возникает сомнений, что ос. ᵆlx˳yj | ælxojnæ, как и другие термины обработки шерсти, относится к древнейшему слою языка. См. под ælvīsyn прясть, wædært прясло, wafyn ткать, nyvændyn мотать пряжу, , , q˳ynǧun шерсть. Allowing for initial lx- here to go back to gr-, as in , Bailey (Asica 36) reconstructed this word as grab-na- from grab- grab, hold (part of spindle which is held when winding thread). The supposed phonetic development is: grabna- → gravna- → grauna- → lxun-; cf. from kabnaka-, , from tafna-, from hvafna- etc. This is doubtful, however, because in all other cases the verb grab- is reflected in Ossetic with rǧ-, lǧ-, and not lx-: , , irǧævyn, . ʼlx end of spindle ( 16. — 126) should also be taken into account, if it is not related to alǧ tip, point. In the article <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">Arya III</q> ( 1961 XXIV 472, fn. 9) Bailey reconstructs the stem alek-, alakh, citing also ἠλακάτη, ἀλακάτα distaff, spindle. ἠλακάτη was connected by Lidén (Armenische Studien. Göteborg, 1906, pp. 130—131) with il, ilikʼ spindle. Hence we have the following sequence: Ossetic ælxun- (j secondarily develops before the sonorant) from alaxuna-, alax, ἠλακάτη, il, ilikʼ spindle. — In any case it is doubtless that Ossetic ᵆlx˳yj | ælxojnæ, just as other wool processing terms, is part of the oldest layer of the lexicon.
