Comparable to the ethnic term oguz | ogur [the latter form ogur represents a regular version of the former oguz, with the Bulgar (Chuvash) alternation z ↔ r]. Cf. Οὐννουγοῦροι = on ogur ten Ogurs, and also the name of a Turkic people Ὀγώρ (6th c.) (Markwart, Ungarische Jahrbücher IX 89). It is possible that the Nart epics retained an echo of the invasion of the Ogur-Bulgars in the region of the North Caucasus, dated by V. Munkàcsi to the second half of the 5th century AD ( VI 185 ff.).
