Георгий“ (см. ), „св. Илья“ (см. ), „св. Флор и Лавр“ (см. ) и др.%nXLII 416, 417. — 50. — 93. It is derived from ‘water’ and Bettyr (Saint) Peter, literally “water Peter”. The name “Peter” in the form Bettyr is attested in the Ossetic language, the initial b is the result of dissimilative vocalization (like ‘mint’ if from pʼitʼna). Under the influence of the Gospel stories about Saint Peter's fishing, his image appeared in the Christian tradition associated with the water element; he was considered, in particular, the patron saint of sailors, etc. (D. ŠestakovResearch of Greek folk saint tales. 1910, pp. 55—56). This explains the fact that the functions of the old pagan water deity were assigned to Saint Peter after the Christianization of the Alans. In the same way they got their mythological image of “St. George” (see ), “St. Elijah” (see ), “Saints Florus and Laurus” (see ) etc.%nXLII 416, 417. — 50. — 93.
