Assuming the original meaning to smoke, to blacken by holding over fire, we see in an old fusion of the preverb а- and the stem raw- to soil, to make dirty, cf. ā-lūdan to soil (from ā-lāv-: 8); maybe the following words are related as well: alwōyəl, a(w)law- to scorch, to burn, to fry; āludan is sometimes connected to lutum, λύμα mud, polluo to make dirty etc. Ossetic wyrawyn to burn has the same stem raw, fused with the preverb wy-. In the middle voice the same verb with the regular stem vowel weakening (au → u) is found in Digor arujun be scorched with fire. araun, arawan frying pan for toasting bread ( I 77) reflects Ossetic arawæn.
