An old fusion of the preverb а- and the stem rav- (ru-) to make noise, to roar; cf. rav- to roar, to make noise, to rattle, rāuti, ravati, ruvati roars, revetʼ to roar, ὠρύομαι to let out a cry, to roar, rumor noise, ravus hoarse etc.; within Iranian, maybe the following words are related as well: varüy- : varoid-, varau- : varüd- howl, bark ( XLV 225).
