An old fusion of the preverb a- with raz- ( *reǵ-) to direct etc. Cf. razk kun to build, to repair (razk straight), vi-raz- to direct, to erect, to make, to arrange ( Abt. III, Bd. IV, p. 27, 136 ff., 273), rēz- : rāst to make, to build, to prepare ( I 285), pat-raz-, püt-rüz to stretch, to stand straight, afraz- (afrāxtan) to erect, to raise, rāz building, builder, architect, murarius ( II 4), rāz building, builder (Geiger Arch. Orient. 1938 X 210. — Henning IX 87), rrāys- (= rāz-) to direct, harays- (= ha-raz-) to become stretched, birays (= bi-raz-) to extend, become extended, raz-, rāz- to direct, raj- (irajyati) to direct, to govern, ὀρέγω id., rego to direct, to govern, richten to direct. It is possible to distinguish this verb in some Scythian proper names: Φανδάραζος (Ossetic fænd intention and , see: Ws. Miller, 1886, Oct., p. 256 ff. — 54). The strong grade of the stem without a preverb (razyn) has not been preserved in Ossetic, but rast straight is an old past participle of this verb; see .Ws. Miller.
