The word comes from a Caucasian subtstrate: bəl, bil (E.A.Bokarevp. c.) lip (Bezhta), pʼil lip, pʼiri mouth. The correspondence ejective → voiced is supported by other cases (299, 325, 520). Cf. other anatomical names of Caucasian origin: ‘arm’, ‘leg’, ‘mouth’, ‘nose’. Due to Caucasian correspondences we should reject the connection with bila- (III 155; 33) hole.%n78, 88, 105, 118, 299, 325, 326, 520.
