Ср. . It traces back to *dais- ( *deiḱ-) show, which is present in the Ossetic av-dīs-yn ‘show’ [see ]. Apart from parallels cited under that word we can add wyδʼs- surprise and *dēs(dys) image. The development of the meaning: ‘show’ → ‘sign’ → ’miracle’. The same ideosemantics (and based on the same phonetic base) is found in taikn miracle (while taiknjan show), prō-dig-ium miracle (while dig-itus finger ← “what is used for showing”), where the stem *deig- represents a variation of *deiḱ-.
