Можно было бы думать также о связи с ‘нести’, имея в виду переносные значения этого глагола: ‘выкармливать’, ‘содержать’. Семантически последняя этимология меньше удовлетворяет. From *fæl-xast, a lexicalized past participle of a verb *fæl-xaz-? Cf. *parxēz- (prɣyz-) damage (Benveniste183). The final consonant was dropped as in etc. One could also think about the relation to ‘carry’, bearing in mind figurative meanings of this verb: ‘bring up’, ‘support’. From the semantic point of view, the latter etymology is less satisfactory.
