Traces back to a common Indo-European *pos- ‘behind’, ‘after’. Cf. pas (also pes in dialects) behind, after, pašt, päšt behind (Abt. III, Bd. II, p. 231), paš, pas, pasi, peš, pešte behind, after, apešt назад, pas, *apaš-(ʼpšy) behind, *pešt(pyšt) then, however, pātca (from *pasča) later, again, pasā behind, after, pasāva (from pasā-ava ‘after that’) then, pasča behind, after, paśča behind, after, then, pozdě then, pàs near, pāskui behind, pas behind, after, post behind, after. Ossetic fæstæ regularly traces back to pasča with the usual change č→t after s (cf. ‘something’ from *is-cy). That is why it is impossible to equate Ossetic fæstæ and pešt (Zaleman1907, p. 546), if the latter traces back to *pasa-tya (I 79–80). Cf. .%nII 86; 37. — 65.
