Звуковая история слова представляется в следующем виде: *pati-pāh- → *pait-pā- → feppa-. Стало быть, рр из tp. Напомним, что в дигорском преверб fæ-, восходящий также к pati-, вызывает геминацию начального согласного глагола (383), что несомненно объясняется „скрытым“ присутствием отпавшего согласного t в pati- (→ pat-). Таким образом, *pait-pā → fippa-, как *čatbar → ‘четыре’. Traces back to *pati-pāh-, a fusion of the preverb pati- (→fi-) with the verb pāh- ‘look’, ‘see’, a modification of the verb рā(у)- ‘guard’ etc. (Bartholomae, AiW 89). Cf. *pāy-(pʼy-) watch, *ā-pāy-(ʼʼpʼy) notice, watch (90), pūy- watch (?), pāh- look, pā(y)- guard. See latter correspondences under ‘shepherd’. The phonetic history of the word seems to be as follows: *pati-pāh- → *pait-pā- → feppa-. Thus, рр is from tp. Let us remind that in Digor the preverb fæ-, also tracing back to pati-, causes gemination of the initial consonant (383), which is undoubtedly explained by the ‘hidden’ presence of the dropped consonant t in pati- (→ pat-). Thus, *pait-pā → fippa-, as *čatbar → ‘four’.
