Кокиева). Derivate from læg man using the abstract suffix -ad and gemination of final -g, as in a number of other cases (see § 1982). In its structure and meaning, the derivation is completely analogous to hommage fulfilment of a vassal’s duty to his sovereign, submission, respect, homage from homme ( homo) man (cf.: Pisani. Etimologia. Milano, 1947, pp. 169f.). The word , like hommage, may go back to the feudal era and reflect the older meaning of the word læg man of lower social class, slave, found in a number of Caucasian languages (see under ). With the decline of feudalism in Ossetia, the meaning peasant, vassal evolved towards person, man, but is still felt in . Also in favour of the proposed explanation is the fact that in Digor, the meaning service is expressed (alongside læggadæ) by lægʒīnadæ, which normally means courage: lægʒīnadæ kænuncæ kæsægi ældærttæn they are serving the Kabardian princes (from the records of G. Kokiev).
