Словообразовательный анализ открывает две возможности: либо rīftag примыкает к ript, rift, с наращением употребительного форманта -ag, либо rīftag по образованию стоит в одном ряду с kættag (из kæn-tag) полотно, zæl-dag шелк, где в первой части соответственно kæn конопля, лен и zæl шелк, а во второй — tag нить, ткань. В последнем случае rif-tag означало (сума), плетеная (fag) из ремней (rif = raip). По семантическому образованию (название предмета по материалу) ср. xyzyn сума от xyz вуаль, сетка, тюль, кружевной платок. It is adjacent to the German group of words: rift cover, veil, curtain, cloak, ript piece of fabric, reifar plural wrapper, reifa wrap, reip, raip (skauda-raip shoe strap) sling, belt ( II 884, 893). Derivational analysis opens up two possibilities: either rīftag is adjacent to ript, rift, with the augmentation of the common formant -ag, or rīftag has the same derivation pattern as kættag (from kæn-tag) canvas, zæl-dag silk, where in the first part there are respectively kæn hemp, flax and zæl silk, and in the second part there is tag thread, cloth. In the latter case rif-tag means (bag), made (fag) of belts (rif = raip). As for semantic shift (naming of the item by its material), cf. xyzyn bag from xyz veil, net, tulle, lace scarf.
