Compound from rag early and from cæwyn go with a strong ablaut grade, as in xos-ʒaw, - etc. ( § 201II 1, 2072), and with a connecting vowel a ( § 2076), literally with a preliminary move. Cf. a synonymous word , where gaw traces back to gu-, gaw go, and also a similar derivation pattern in -a- (the same pattern, as in rag-a-caw).
