Как название породы собак встречается в некоторых языках Кавказа, преимущественно в фольклоре: samərla it (в нартовском сказании о Рачикау), samər собака гончая ( I 198), сказочная крылатая собака (Нарты. Кабардинский эпос. М., , стр. 482, 498). Сочетание соболь-собака могло означать либо соболевидная собака, либо собака, применяемая для охоты на соболя. It is litearlly sable-dog.  (← sīah samūr black sable) ( VI 726, 1011).The word is loaned also into some of the European languages: zamarra, chamarre Zobel, samarra schleppender Rock ( 626). As the name of the dog breed it occurs in some of the Caucasian languages, mostly in folklore: samərla it (in the Nart saga about Rachikau), samər beagle ( I 198), fairy winged dog (Narty. Kabardinskij èpos [The Narts. The Kabardian Sagas]. Moscow, , p. 482, 498). The compound sable-dog could mean either sable-like dog, or the dog that is used by hunting sable.
