Goes back to stāyu- and means actually predator, thief; cf. tāyu-, stāyu- thief, taj secretly, tatь thief, outlaw. Also here sitādan, sitāndan, sitānīdan take, steal, grab, capture ( 804, 805). gorno-staj ( gornostaj) from gormo-staj represents perhaps a Slavic mix of German (, .) harmo weasel and staj lynx. 7—8.
