The sound image of the Ossetian word is the result of adaptation to the familiar model of childrenʼs words: gemination of the second consonant (-pp-), the final -a. See also such childrenʼs words as bappa bread, ʒykka porridge, gucca cap, gyxxa excrements. — Partly directly from the Turkic, partly through the Ossetic intermediation, the word entered a number of Caucasian languages: sibaki (VII 1391), sippa tube for urine drainage, baby cradle accessories ( 374), sippä, c’əppä id. On the Iranian ground, see ṣ̌ippä baby pot ( 322), ṣ̌ufčak (← šubčuk) device (tube) in the cradle to divert urine ( 275). — The etymology of the Turkic word, as far as one can judge, has not been established. Budagov questionably compares it with čubuk stick, shank. Possible is the connection with the verb sip-, sep- pour ( IV 726).
