Показательную параллель дает убыхский язык на Кавказе: txa совмещает значения тонкий и бедра, стан (Dirr, Caucasica 1928 V 15. — Mészaros 272). It is derived from tanu- body: tan, tana, tan body, person, tanvār corpus, belly ( 21), tän, tan, tanā body, corpus, tan, tanā, tan, tano, ton, tan body,In both Kurdish and Afghani, as well as in Pamiri languages, the word can be borrowed from Persian. tan, tan- in tnp’r id. ( 273). Bailey links ttani- (Tumshuk tana-) spin not to tanu- body, but to tanu- thin (KhT VI 100). Cf., further tanu- body, person, self (is also used as a reflexive pronoun), tanu- id. From Iranian comes t’ani body ( 376). Further connections are not clear. Oštir ( III 206) connected tělo, deriving it from tēn-lo. One could also think of an ancient sonant oscillation n || l (ten- || tel-); cf.: 1973 VI 189. — The meaning alternation body → belly does not pose any special problems: part by the whole. In the meaning of body Ossetic fixes bwarbwær ← upā-vara-. — Is there a connection between tanu- body and tanu- thin (cf. tænæg)? Some acknowledge it ( 1069), others question it ( I 475). A revealing parallel is given by the Ubykh language in the Caucasus: txa combines the meaning thin and thigh, figure (Dirr, Caucasica 1928 V 15. — Mészaros 272). The meaning skin could be cohesive between thin and body (cf. above ttani-). — Cf. tænǵyn, tænǧazæ, tænt’īxæg and, perhaps artæn insides, if from arf-tæn depth of stomach. III 150.
